Netflix VFX Workflow with HELIOS

Description

This guide details the necessary steps to ensure the system is ready for the standard Netflix workflows.  One of the biggest struggles in virtual production is the inconsistent nature of all of the devices in line.  To alleviate this, Netflix has defined standard workflows that the operators should know how to use and, if necessary, override.

Standard Requirements

These system-wide settings should be set prior to starting a production.  These are requirements across all workflows (individual productions will change, as needed).  Refer to the "Revert back to the standard workflow" section below to see how to set each of these individually.

  • All color adjustments are untouched (default values in HELIOS's case)
  • System brightness set to 100%
  • No overrides from the input to output (e.g., Rec. 2020 input should be Rec. 2020 output by default)
  • No tone mapping

Below, we have organized the standardized workflows into a table to better step through each.  The bold (top) line is the most important and considered the standard workflow.  The rest are workflows that the operator can expect to use from time to time.

Confirming workflow (Saved configurations)

Below, there is a ZIP file of HELIOS Configurations that can be uploaded into HELIOS.  Each one of these will force HELIOS into the workflow needed from the table above and is named as such (see left side green box below).  Uploading these into HELIOS is the most efficient way to confirm the correct settings are currently running

Reverting back to the standard workflow

In the event something changes and there is a need to revert back to the default workflow, it is as easy and applying the configuration file again.

  1. Select the correct workflow (assumes they are already uploaded)
  2. Toggle on any changes that need reverting (hint: the blue text is what has changed compared to the chosen configuration)
  3. Apply the configuration to make these settings take effect (will happen instantly)

Utilizing the API to automate these workflows

There are a couple of ways that users can automate this via API.  First, there is a Companion module for HELIOS which includes changing Saved Configurations.  If needed, the users are also able to set these settings individually over the public API.

For more information, the HELIOS API documentation and Companion module can be found here: Megapixel | HELIOS | Support
